Fantasdic 1.0-beta5
Just a short notice to say that I finally took the time to release Fantasdic 1.0-beta5. The release was ready since the middle of November! If you were using Fantasdic 1.0-beta4, I strongly recommend you to upgrade. Go see the Fantasdic website!

Dear Mr,
- I was unable to obtain a result with google translation. Does it work (I use 1.0-beta5)?
- “rechercher” button into the menu bar erases the search field but does not allow to search. Seems not related to search inside text too, so I do not know what it means…
- There is a technical limitation. A user should find a server that hosts the most (or all) dictionaries relevant to his language. Otherwise, it is necessary to use different servers, and in this case, it is impossible to do simultaneous searches on both servers.
- A functional improvement could be to count the number of words into the clipboard, if they are more than 1 then use google translation rather than the default dict server.
- Use simultaneously two translator services. I’d like the Yahoo too that sometimes provides better translation.
- I prefer your interface compare those of stardict, however I regret an historical side panel (I like SpeedCrunch calculator too, because of this feature).
- The result panel can display a lot of results which also probably means that the definition is long. In this case, when I select a sub-result, I’d like to see immediately highlighted the corresponding words into the result text area. Try to search “lie’, with the option “word”. You obtain 47 results. How to easily find “lie upon” into the text definition?
- could you post into your blog which are the best servers for the languages you use, and let users comment and complete the list according to their own language or technical requirements.
- release a deb package before ubuntu hardy release :-) so that Fantasdic becomes the default package.

Yes it should. Give me more details. What is happening? If the program crashes, run Fantasdic from a shell and give me the console output.

Indeed, the name is not clear. I will rename it “New search”. This is convenient when you want to start a new search and then push Enter. You can use ctrl + N as well.

I don’t control what dictionaries people install on their servers… What you can do is run your own dictd server on your local machine with the dictionaries you like.

Except that one may not have any Google Translate dictionary configured or have more than one Google Translate dictionary configured.

Good idea. One way to handle this is to rename Google Translate something like Translation Services and then it would be possible to choose which services to use in the Databases tab.

Stardict’s interface is very fuzzy, not to say crappy.
I had to give up the history side pane in order to have the match side pane… Having both would be too much. Instead the search entry has a short history.

I don’t understand your point. If you use the word search method, then “lie upon” should appear in the left side pane, not in the text result.

Please file a bug on launchpad asking them to sync Fantasdic with Debian unstable.

After some test, I confirm that Google Translate doesn’t work anymore. I suspect that Google changed the layout of their translation page.
